A Day at the Races is a Door Game designed for use on a BBS. The game
simulates real track betting. Callers may race Horses, Dogs, Crabs,
or Bugs, and may name their racer. If a caller loses all of their
money, they may get a loan. The game also keeps comprehensive stats
of each player and their racers.

- Setup -
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Unarchive ADATR into a directory. The following files should be included in
the archive:
ADATR.EXE - Main Executable
INSTRUCT.ADR -
THANKS.ADR -
LOAN.ADR - Display Files
BADLOAN.ADR -
ANIMALS.ADR -
REGISTER.DOC - Registration Form
ADATR.DOC - Game Documentation
BDSOFT.TXT - Listing of BDSoft Programs
The only file you need to create is the configuration file, which is a
simple five (5) line Ascii text file:
Line 1 ===> GAP BBS Software Type
Line 2 ===> C:\BBS Path to Data File
Line 3 ===> My BBS BBS Name
Line 4 ===> Joe Smith SysOp Name
Line 5 ===> 0 Locked Baud Rate
- 2 -
Line 1 - Valid Names are: GAP for GAP (DOOR.SYS), SF for Spitfire, RBBS for
RBBS, WC for Wildcat!, and PCB for PCBoard.
Line 2 - Directory where the Data (or "Door Drop") files are located.
Line 3 - Name of your BBS.
Line 4 - SysOp's Name.
Line 5 - Locked Baud Rate. If you do not lock your baud rate, then enter 0.
ADATR must be called with this configuration file on the command line. You
may name the file anything you wish. For Example:
ADATR ADATR.CFG
will execute the door with the configuration file. If the file is not found
or an error occurs, the appropriate error message will display.
You may play the door locally by entering LOCAL after the configuration file
parameter.
The first time the game is run, a players data file called PLAYERS.DAT will
be created. To reset the game, simply delete this file.

- General Notes About The Game -
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
This documentation will not go into detail on how to play the game
because the instructions can be viewed while in the door. However, several
points are worth mentioning.
If the game is UnRegistered, when the caller enters the door, they will
see a message stating "Please wait while the SysOp is reminded to Register".
The Bbs terminal, meanwhile, will display a reminder screen while track
fanfare is played.
When the caller exits the door, there will be a 20 second delay if the
game is not Registered.
If a caller loses all of his/her money and visits Big Al for a loan, the
most they can receive is 10 dollars if the door is not Registered.
The most races a caller may have a day is 10 if the game is UnRegistered.
If a caller is broke and has taken a loan from Big Al and if they exit the
door with at least 5 races left, then Big Al will cancel part of the debt in
exchange for the caller losing some racing turns.
If a caller enters the door or exits the door and still owes Big Al money,
Big Al will appear to remind them.
If a caller has taken a loan and wins at least that amount back, Big Al
will automatically take the amount of the loan back.
If a caller enters the door with no money, whether they have a loan or not,
they will always find at least 10 dollars.
If a caller has taken a loan, they cannot get another loan until the first
one is payed back.
A caller may not take a loan if they are not broke.
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
- If The Game Is Registered -
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Once the game is Registered, all reminder screens and delays are removed, plus
all available features are available.
When you Register your copy of A Day at the Races, you will receive a
SysOp utility that will allow you to alter any information (except the
player's name) in the Players Data file. The utility will also allow
you to customize the configuration file.
- 4-
If your copy is registered, you may wish to create ANSI and ASCII bulletins
of game statistics. The bulletins show the top five players with the most
money who have run at least 1 race. To use this option, simply add two (2)
lines to the bottom of the configuration file:
Line 1
Line 2
Line 3
Line 4
Line 5
c:\bbs\display\bulletin.ans <== Line 6
c:\bbs\display\bulletin.asc <== Line 7
The first entry MUST be the ANSI file, and the second the ASCII file.
You must enter complete path and filenames. If you do not wish to create
bulletins, then simply leave these two lines blank and the files
ADATR.ANS and ADATR.ASC will be created in the current directory.
If your copy is Registered and you wish to set the maximum daily races to
a number other than 10, then you must add a line to the config file
containing that number. This entry MUST be on line 8. Even if you
are not creating the bulletins, this entry must be on line 8. If you
do not wish to set the race limit, then simply omit this line.
For example, if you are not creating the bulletins but still wish to
set the maximum race limit, your config file will look like this:
Line 1
Line 2
Line 3
Line 4
Line 5
20 <==== Line 8
If your copy is registered, whenever a caller enters the racing screen and
depending upon the type of racer chosen, the game will search for a data
file containing the corresponding racers names. If the file is not found
or the game is UnRegistered, then ADATR will use default names. For
example, if a caller chooses to go to the Horse Races, then a file named
HORSES.DAT is searched for. This file is a simple five (5) line Ascii
text file containing whatever names you have chosen:
Name 1 <== Line 1
Name 2 |
Name 3 |
Name 4 |
Name 5 <== Line 5
- 5 -
The four data files and their names are: HORSES.DAT for Horse Racing,
DOGS.DAT for Dog Racing, CRABS.DAT for Crab Racing, and BUGS.DAT for
Bug Racing.
That's It! For Instructions on how to play the game, just run the door
and choose option 1 from the menu.
Thanks for trying A Day at the Races!
